The Basics of Acupuncture

Acupuncture is both a science and an art, with a history tracing back 3000 years.

Acupuncture is rooted in the ancient belief that our health depends on the smooth flow of a vital energy called “qi”(pronounced "chee") throughout the body. This energy travels along a network of invisible channels just beneath the skin. When the flow of qi is blocked or out of balance, it can lead to pain, stress, or illness.

What causes these disruptions? Everything from emotional stress and physical injuries to poor eating habits and exhaustion can throw qi off course.

That’s where acupuncture comes in. Using ultra-fine needles placed at specific points along these energy pathways, acupuncturists help clear blockages and get qi moving again. The result? A restored balance that supports the body’s natural ability to heal and stay well.

How Matt Works

Matt graduated from The City College of Acupuncture, where the teachings are rooted in the philosophy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

Each session with Matt begins with a discussion of your current concerns, followed by a TCM-based diagnosis. This is determined through an assessment of your signs, symptoms, tongue and pulse.

After the diagnosis, Matt will provide a personalized treatment —typically involving acupuncture needling at specific points. Occasionally, other techniques may also be incorporated, depending on your needs.

The needles are usually retained for 20 to 30 minutes, during which you're left to relax and enjoy the therapeutic process.
